Finding your momentum – the key to staying motivated

The excitement of fresh starts and big ambitions often collides with the practical challenges of everyday life, and that’s when momentum becomes essential. But how do you sustain motivation when the initial spark starts to fade?

Momentum isn’t just about willpower or discipline – it’s about understanding what fuels you and creating the right conditions to keep going. Whether you’re climbing the career ladder, developing new skills, or striving for personal growth, momentum is what keeps you moving forward.

The science of momentum

Momentum isn’t just a feeling – it’s a force. In physics, things keep moving unless something stops them. The same principle applies to our motivation. The key is to minimise friction and maximise the energy that drives you.

One of the biggest disruptors of momentum is misaligned motivation. If you’re struggling to stay engaged, it might be time to revisit what truly drives you. Are you working towards something meaningful? Does your environment support your progress? Taking time to reflect on these questions can help your focus.

How you can build and sustain momentum

  1. Motivation thrives on achievement, but waiting for major milestones can be demotivating. Break your goals into smaller steps and acknowledge each one – momentum is built through continuous movement.

  2. Have you ever been so engaged in a task that time seems to disappear? That’s called ‘flow,’ and it’s a powerful driver of momentum. Identify the conditions that help you focus and recreate them regularly.

  3. When motivation wanes, reconnect with your purpose. Why did you set this goal in the first place? Visualising the impact of your efforts can reignite your drive and keep you moving forward.

Keeping momentum

Sustainable success is about more than just starting strong – it’s about building habits that keep you going. Take a moment to reflect on what motivates you, adjust where needed, and keep your momentum alive.
