From setback to summit: how to build real resilience at work

Motivation is the energy that powers your progress. So, how do you protect it when things go wrong? One of the most effective tools is this simple mindset strategy:

Pause. Reflect. Reframe.

It sounds straightforward, and it is, but it’s incredibly powerful in practice. Here’s how it works:

  1. Pause
Give yourself a moment before rushing into action or letting emotions take over. Take a moment, breathe. A short pause helps break the reactive cycle and creates space for clearer thinking.

  1. Reflect
Ask yourself: What happened? What am I telling myself about this?
Often, we start spinning stories in our minds, such as “I’ve failed,” “They don’t trust me,” or “I’m not cut out for this.” Recognising these internal narratives is essential to moving past them.

  1. Reframe
Now, look at the situation from a different perspective, one that supports learning, not judgment. For example:

  • This hasn’t gone to plan, but there’s something valuable here.
  • This feedback points to where I can grow.
  • This challenge is part of the process, not a reason to give up.

This isn’t about pretending things are fine. It’s about choosing a perspective that keeps you motivated and focused on progress.

    Why it works

The way we think shapes the way we act. ‘Pause, reflect, reframe,’ helps you slow down, get perspective, and respond intentionally, rather than being driven by frustration or fear. It builds emotional awareness and resilience without draining your motivation.

    Try it this week

    • When something goes wrong or feels difficult, don’t rush past it.
    • Take five minutes to pause and reflect – note down what you’re thinking.
    • Practice reframing the story into something more balanced and constructive.
    • Consider sharing it with someone else. Saying it aloud can reinforce the shift in thinking.

Remember: setbacks don’t define your journey – how you respond to them does.
This week, try using ‘pause, reflect, reframe,’ as a tool to keep climbing, even when the path gets steep.
