Ever feel stuck in a work rut? Maybe you’re feeling unmotivated, frustrated, or simply not enjoying your job as much as you used to. The ‘5 Whys’ technique, originally developed by Toyota as a problem-solving method, can be a simple yet powerful way to uncover what’s really making you feel this way and help you take small, meaningful steps towards greater job satisfaction.
What is the ‘5 Whys’ technique?
The ‘5 Whys’ is a straightforward method for identifying the root cause of a problem. It works by asking “Why?” five times in succession to drill down to the deeper reason behind an issue. Instead of focusing on surface-level frustrations, this approach helps you find out what’s really affecting your happiness at work.
Here’s how you can use it to create a more positive work experience.
Step 1: Identify what’s bothering you
Start by pinpointing something that’s affecting your happiness at work. It could be feeling unmotivated, struggling with workload, or a lack of recognition.
For example: Why do I feel unmotivated at work?
Step 2: Ask “Why?” five times
By repeatedly asking why, you can uncover the deeper reason behind your frustration. Note that each ‘Why’ should be slightly different, as you dig further into the problem, and use your answers to tailor the next question. The best way to explain it is with an example:
- Why do I feel unmotivated at work?
Because I don’t feel excited about my tasks.
- Why don’t I feel excited about my tasks?
Because they feel repetitive and unchallenging.
- Why do they feel repetitive and unchallenging?
Because I haven’t had new opportunities to grow.
- Why haven’t I had new opportunities?
Because I haven’t spoken to my manager about wanting new challenges.
- Why haven’t I spoken to my manager?
Because I assumed they wouldn’t support me, but I’ve never actually asked.
Step 3: Take small, positive steps
Now that you’ve uncovered the real reason behind your frustration, you can take simple actions to improve the situation. If you’re stuck in repetitive tasks, talking to your manager about new responsibilities might help. If you’re feeling unappreciated, finding ways to track and share your successes could make a difference.
Step 4: Use the ‘5 Whys’ as a regular check-in
Work satisfaction isn’t a one-time fix – it’s an ongoing process. Whenever you start feeling frustrated, stuck, or disengaged, try the ‘5 Whys’ to understand what’s really going on and take steps to improve it.
